Is an outside ball holder better than carrying the ball inside?
An outside holder gives the ball its own access point and can leave more interior room for other gear, but adds to the loaded shape. Internal carry encloses the ball. Compare the actual closure, pocket access and full load before choosing.

Three layouts, three access patterns
An external holder carries the ball outside the main shell. A dedicated ball pocket provides a separate storage area; check its location and opening on the exact model. Shared internal storage puts the ball in the main compartment with other gear.
Athletico Streetball uses an expandable exterior ball pocket with an adjustable buckle. Nike Varsity Elite places a full-size basketball in the main compartment. These document different layouts without establishing which carries more comfortably.
Try the access sequence you need
With the bag packed, retrieve the item you need before practice, then the ball and shoes. An exterior ball may obstruct another pocket; an internal ball may require moving clothing or school items. Check both insertion and removal.
Pack to leave as well. Confirm the holder closes as intended with the rest of the bag full, and check whether a loose pocket or strap needs stowing after ball removal.
Check closure and loaded shape
Use your inflated ball to check the specified buckle, drawstring, elastic pouch or zipper. Follow the manufacturer’s adjustment method. A generic clip or webbing loop is not evidence of a purpose-built ball restraint.
Compare the whole packed outline, including the protruding ball.
